Intercession
What is intercession? According to the dictionary, it is the act of interposing or pleading on behalf of another; it is a prayer, petition, or entreaty in favor of another. Though Christians normally associate intercession as “praying for others,” intercession often takes place between human beings. When people testify in court as a character reference, they are interceding for that person. In the Bible, a prominent example of intercession is when Abigail intercedes for husband Nabal with David before David became king!

"The Decline and Fall of Christian America"? - Not!
By Rev. Peter Marshall; used with permission. ". . .Why do you not know how to interpret the present time?" (Luke 12:56) The cover of Newsweek magazine for the Easter week issue this year was coal black, with large red letters in the form of a cross that spelled out: The Decline and Fall of Christian America. For the few evangelical Christian readers that Newsweek may still have this was déjà vu -- the magazine has gleefully trumpeted about three times in the last 15 years or so that Christianity is dying, and all but in its influence in our society.

A Review of The Shack by William P. Young
I've just finished reading "The Shack" by William P. Young. While the book was not easy reading for the first chapter or two, The chief character Mack, while going camping with his children, leaves his youngest daughter in order to save the boy friend of his older daughter, who is caught under a canoe when it capsizes. Mack succeeds in his rescue, but when he returns to his campsite, the daughter is gone. The daughter is not found, but the evidence points to the work of a serial killer. As you might guess, the story unfolds as a form of answer the question of theodicy -- how can God be good in a world with so much suffering and evil? It is also a study of the Holy Trinity.

Biblical Thinking - Part IV
by Peter Marshall Printed by Permission So, even someone who does not believe that God exists is no more free to take his life in his hands and do away with it than I am. Nor is it Biblically permissible for me to assist any one else in playing God in his own life by helping that person kill himself. Not only is that a refusal to submit to God's authority about the times and seasons of one's life, and therefore rebellion against God, but it is also an act of enthroning despair and rejecting the redemptive love and power of God. Both the doctrine of the image of God and the doctrine of redemption forbid assisted suicide and euthanasia.

Where Is the Light?
I confess that as I was lamenting our national decadence in my prayers, I heard what I believe was the Divine Word asking me a question. "Where is the Light?" was the sense I made out of it.

Does God Exist? ABC Debate
Last night ABC Nightline featured a face-off with Kirk Cameron from the 80's sit-com "Growing Pains" and his preacher, Roy Comfort of the "Way of the Master" congregation on one side and two atheists who called themselves the Rational Responders Squad (Brian Sapient and a woman who refused to give her last name but called Kelly) on the other. Cameron and Comfort presented as evidence for God the design of the universe, moral conscience, and God's revelation as three evidences for God. They certainly came at it from the point of view of Truth with a capital T. Their claim that God is 100% scientifically provable, however, overplays their hand. While the evidence from design suggests ...

Screwtape Revisited
My dear Wormwood, I am disappointed in you. I told you before that your campaign to have AHappy Holidays replace Merry Christmas had to be undertaken with infinitesimal patience in order that it be accomplished through persuasion not commands. It is one thing to persuade businesses that they offend fewer people by substituting the generic Ahappy holidays instead of the traditional AMerry Christmas. It is quite another to have them forbid their employees to say Merry Christmas. Human beings, weak-kneed contemptible creatures that they are, nonetheless cling to their so-called Afree will as though their miserable little souls depended upon it. Most often their stubborness works in our ...

Baptism

In introduction, there are several things to emphasize as we begin this study.

1. We do not believe in Baptismal Regeneration. Let me remind you that it was over the question of the sacraments that Calvin and Luther differed during the Reformation Period. To Calvin, and those who have followed him, the important thing is the individual's coming directly to Christ for salvation. In regard to baptism, we who are Presbyterians, are interested primarily not in the water baptism but in the baptism of the Holy Spirit, which takes place when the individual accepts Christ as his personal Saviour.

Our Confession of Faith, Chapter 28, Section 5, makes it very clear that ...
